Michael Moore: Ironies of "Backlash"

Excerpt rom Michael Moore's website:

"The next day -- and in the two weeks since -- the right-wing pundits and radio shock jocks have been calling for my head. So, has all this ruckus hurt me? Have they succeeded in "silencing" me?

Well, take a look at my Oscar "backlash":

-- On the day after I criticized Bush and the war at the Academy Awards, attendance at "Bowling for Columbine" in theaters around the country went up 110% (source: Daily Variety/BoxOfficeMojo.com). The following weekend, the box office gross was up a whopping 73% (Variety). It is now the longest-running consecutive commercial release in America, 26 weeks in a row and still thriving. The number of theaters showing the film since the Oscars has INCREASED, and it has now bested the previous box office record for a documentary by nearly 300%.

-- Yesterday (April 6), "Stupid White Men" shot back to #1 on the New York Times bestseller list. This is my book's 50th week on the list, 8 of them at number one, and this marks its fourth return to the top position, something that virtually never happens."

There is nothing more attractive than a “leftist” patting himself on the back, the seat of his pants where he sits elevated from the dumb public by, as he so humbly proffers, his inflating wallet. There is a big green line between Bill O'Reilly and Michael Moore, but both neglect the attempt of a dialogue and prefer to bait and abuse. There were more conversions to Islam in America after 911 than ever before. Do Americans become more intelligent because of spectacle? The two members of the Columbine trench coat mafia envisioned piloting there getaway plane into the twin towers. What is Michael Moore’s alternative to the ignorant mass that stuffs his intelligently informed belly? Perhaps he'll funnel his profits into a really cool institution for mudslingers.

YO, bulletproof, do you have friends who are homocidal, psychopathic tyrants? i bet you don't, but if you do what does that say about you? You really need to read some the history of Guatamala (just to take one example)- the guatamalan people elected a president, jacob arbenz, on a land redistribution platform. He was not communist, he just wanted some of his people to actually have the opportunity to actually grow some vegetables on their own soil (is that really radical?), and for united fruit to not have such a monopoly on their agriculture. Of course, United Fruit didn't like this, so they lobbied the Government (with Sigmond Freud's psychoanalytical expert nephew, Edward Birnays leading the campaign) that a communist threat was a few hundred miles away. In 1954, the US aided with personal, money and weaponry to overthrow Arbenz, put in a dictator, and keep business going right on schedule for United Fruit and the other American corps. The poor people were pissed off and revolted. A civil war went on to 1996, and the 150,000 dead are nowhere in the american psyche, which is the biggest tragedy. If you don't believe this account i can refer you to numerous CIA files for proof, and some books written by people who the CIA let in to research their files. Now, what you might call "friendships" sure seems to me to be brutal businessmen looking out for there own bank accounts. Fortunately, it seems more and more people are realizing this.
You mentioned above that you hate the anti-war crowd 'cus they're self-serving and hypocritical.' Now, i don't know how by me saying, "That i don't like innocent people being killed," actually is self serving for me, and i don't believe anyone has the right to take anyone else's life so i don't know where you could accuse me of being hypocritical. On, military cut backs... you need to do your homework, again, for the military budget has never been cut from one year to the next in our lifetime. Yes, i would say that the pay has not increased accordingly for the lower-ranked (class) soldiers. Never enough $1.2 billion(!) stealth-bombers, though, and, hey, we got 10,000 nuclear missles that cost us over a $1,000,000,000,000 (look it up if you don't believe me) but what's a few more? That's where the cash is going, and some CEO's/Politicians are laughing all the way to the bank. Half of our tax-money goes to the military (directly and then indirectly, as it's disguised as defecit spending, which that itself takes a third of our federal tax $). This is where the term "military industrial complex" comes in. Do you really like this? Don't you think it's a bit, um, excessive? Imagine how many books are libraries could get on that trade- in on one stealth-bomber (who are we out-stealthing? Are our F-18's really threatened? If you think so, well, you're mistaken). Yes, it does seem that we need some defense at this stage in time. Since we have had 22 wars since World War II- (22 wars with countries that were not at war with us, by the way, which is clearly illegal to numerous UN charters) we have sure made some enemies... can't really stop a Timothy McVeigh type attack no matter how many weapons you got, though. Maybe, the government could start to be a little less- what's the word i am looking for- yes, murderous, and change its ways? Maybe even apologise, say, to the families of the millions of dead in Vietnam (take your pick) for needless slaughter? You know that war was a doosy when even the Secretary of Defense at the time, Robert McNamara, said "Hey, guys, why are here again?" But this is where i am afraid that you seem to be the hypocrite, for you say are against "when people are being brutalised", yet are you willing to take responsiblity for the brutality your Government has given out? (If anyone is a research nerd and reading this- could you look up how many people the government has killed in these wars? i am DIEING to know)... Now, to get back to the Turkish Kurds... i hope you did your home work, for you should have found some horrifying accounts. Now, i am not saying that the US gov. supports that, per se, and i don't think that they say, "Yo, Turkey, torture some Kurds for me, eh?" It does not change 2 huge facts, though. Firstly, that they don't speak out against this, proving to be utter hypocrites about the Kurds in Iraq. Secondly, they keep forking over around a billion smackeroos to Turkey every year, as they do it (they are our "friends", afterall).
Okay, good, now on your Bukowski quote- i agree 100%...as does Micheal Moore... hallelujah... and to the person who emailed poseing as an iraqi... we know your communication systems are destroyed. Good try, anyway. Even, if you mirraculously are; i sure hope your family wasn't in that market that got bombed, or any of the other shitloads of "collatoral damage"...Any of you catholics praying along with the pope, and begging for forgiveness, as your tax money aids and sinfully disobeys the 10 commandments? God bless the USA....
