Two months ago, President Bush gave a speech outlining America's new priorities in the world. If you missed it, click here to watch a special version -- with all of the bullshit taken out.

Posted by: Mr. Arras on August 20, 2003 01:18 PMI have a healthy sense of myself, especially when I see my words that I have written posted on this electronic ephemera, and I sit back and fold my hands behind my head, let my toes type, and generally be amused with myself. Sure President Bush repeats key phrases, but what bothered me about the editing of the speech was the excising of some brilliant alliterations. The following is what I thought he said, or rather, that is the introductory excuse for me to once again see something I’ve written before your eyes, if you are in fact listening.
The archipelago imbroglio
your curves, the manner with which you bowed
and puckered lips to reassess your Blahniks made me faint
and want to puke then fuck your ass
a little man, a negligence as per the message
The things that spun and were carried aloft made gravity a stone
a hard cock, a lever, something to take hold of in foul weather
or to paddle the day away, the canoe run to the falls
Far worse to be lost in a conversation
you had with yourself a few years back then to blow
the wick that extinguished you from me
or the sounds with which your hips made their wiggle
a cure to the hysteria or a loss of fat
and though I’m loaded, I have the perverse to the gills
the sandwich that won’t stay stacked
I had to give it up for the nomenclatura
for I was beyond myself in plugging you
with antibodies programmed phagocytic
at the shoreline of consciousness
where the sea fingers the shore by laps
The monadology of hugging yourself while masturbating
was a soliloquy of a proud resistance
the bread rises and you want to suffocate your children in an oven embrace
the clown removed his nose at the death of sarcasm.
How it could possibly follow made the hound sigh
and I could be forgiven for a little roughness
if you hadn’t taken my hand and smacked yourself
I am the nobody you’d never stick your nose at
the person next to you, you thought his heart would explode
or dead to the world, talking to your ipod
with the last of it, the thing that you threw out the window
and it wasn’t near where it landed
the next day became the next, and it landslided
the bullet killing made bombs feel like west nile when I whipped you
and shoved my fingers in your wound and turned them
the islands you made of your igloos
the desire to say what is man
the face before the unsayable, the ineffable are we
but hunger, thirst, tired vanquished without the command
Oh, we're listening. We're always LISTENING, all right.
Posted by: Circulars for VICTORY on August 21, 2003 05:03 PMIn any event, how dumb would it appear now that the war is in session to protest the actual murders. A parade in the streets to physically display an opposition to regulated automobile traffic, to enforce the right of unionized police officers to have their overtime, medicinal marijuana and so on is just and a reason to freak-out on peace. North Korea borders the mainland of China which has thus far thumbed their nose at the idea of market capital. World history has never rested in a state of peace. What is peace, beyond not murdering. You love the person next to you on the subway, at the bus stop, the cubicle two rows from you. We are at war, warring, we’re terrorizing and giving them a taste of American shoe leather made in China. There is no tangible reason to protest our actions. Any threat to parliamentary-capitalism should be met bayonet-on. We’ve decided that in the end, we’re better off with a military economy and a trip to Europe would have to take a backseat to our flag waving, overjoyed with our impoverishment. Victory. What does one gain by placating the opposition with sardonic rants. Marx is an important poet, Trotsky a pure situationist. Dip another nothing happened 60s madeleine into your zany protestations.

We can see an example of this in our code we've written so far. In each function's block, we declare variables that hold our data. When each function ends, the variables within are disposed of, and the space they were using is given back to the computer to use. The variables live in the blocks of conditionals and loops we write, but they don't cascade into functions we call, because those aren't sub-blocks, but different sections of code entirely. Every variable we've written has a well-defined lifetime of one function.
